The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, popularly known as UNN, is one of Nigeria’s most prestigious Federal Universities. It is not a surprising accomplishment because it houses some of the best brains in the country.
UNN is the dream school of many JAMBites students like me a few years ago. I remember when I put the school in my JAMB form. It felt like an impossible feat, but thank God I made it.
You may have wondered if the UNN admission process is on merit, the cut-off marks for each department, what the Post UTME format is, etc.
In this post, I will share tips based on my experience on everything you need to know to apply and gain admission to UNN successfully. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions. I would gladly assist you.

UNN Admission Quota

The University of Nigeria uses the NUC Federal Character quota in its admission process;
- 45% Merit: For students who meet the cut-off mark for the course they are applying to study irrespective of their State of Origin.
- 35% Catchment: This covers students from one of the southeastern states (except Ebonyi) and neighbouring states like Delta, Kogi, Edo, etc. The cut-off mark is usually lower than that of the merti.
- 25% Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS): For students from States with inadequate access to education. The cut-off mark is the lowest of the three (3) categories. States in Nigeria in this category include Kwara, Bayelsa, Plateau, Gombe, Katsina, Kebbi, Taraba, Ebonyi, Jigawa, etc.
How to Gain Admission to UNN

Here is the step-by-step process on how to gain admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN);
- Meet the Basic Requirements
- O-Level Results
- Age
- Choose the Right Course
- Register for JAMB
- Apply for UNN Post UTME Screening
- Prepare for and Write UTME
- Meet Departmental Cut-Off Mark
- Check Admission Status
- Acceptance and Registration
- Stay Updated
1. Meet the Basic Requirements
You must meet two (2) admission requirements: O’level and age.
Students applying to UNN must be at least sixteen (16) years of age by the time they resume academic activities. The clearance officer will request your birth certificate during your first-year clearance.
Getting the correct subject combination in your O’level (WAEC or NECO) results is compulsory. Every applicant must possess a minimum of five (5) credits relevant to the course they are applying to study.
For example, if you are applying to study Engineering, you must have credits in the following subjects;
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Chemistry
- Physics
- One of the following Science or Technical subjects: Biology, Further Mathematics, Geography, or Technical Drawing.
2. Choose the Right Course
The primary step to gaining admission is deciding the best course you want to study. This involves choosing a lucrative course and ensuring you meet the O’level requirements, including the cost of study.
The problem here is that many students apply to general courses like Medicine and Law without a good understanding.
It is necessary to sit down, think about your future, and evaluate the course you want to study and its relevance in Nigeria and abroad.
Note that making the wrong decision here would affect your future. You can tell me in the comment box below if you need advice. I will gladly assist you.
3. Register for JAMB
JAMB registration is compulsory for every student applying for undergraduate studies at UNN via UTME or Direct Entry. During this process, you will select UNN as your first choice of preferred institution and course you want to study.
JAMB is the regulatory and examination admission body for all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Every student applying to UNN must sit and pass the JAMB exam.
During your JAMB registration, you must register for four (4) subjects depending on the course you want to study.
Ensure that these four subjects are correct because it could be why you may not get admission even if you meet the cut-off mark.
In the comment, you can always let me know if you are unsure about the JAMB subject combination for the course you want to study at UNN.
4. Apply for UNN Post UTME Screening
The UNN Post UTME application is online on the University Post UTME portal at a fee of two thousand naira (₦2,000).
During the application, you must provide personal identification details like your birth certificate, local government certificate, next of kin details, etc.
The application is straightforward and can be done by every applicant with basic knowledge of the internet. However, you can register at a computer center if it is your first time applying to UNN.
5. Prepare for and Write UTME
The UNN Post UTME is a CBT exam that comprises sixty multiple-choice questions for sixty minutes. The subject combination is the same as your JAMB subjects.
Every student applying to UNN must pass the Post UTME with a high score because it determines 50-60% of your admission chances, depending on the policy adopted for the particular admission year.
It is important to note that sometimes, UNN does not conduct Post UTME exams but instead opts for admission screening using O’level results.
6. Meet Departmental Cut-Off Mark
Meeting the departmental cut-off mark is the most essential requirement for admission. This score is based on the JAMB and Post UTME performance of students applying to each course.
There are three (3) different types of cut-off marks in UNN;
- Merit cut-off mark
- Catchment area cut-off mark
- ELDS cut-off mark
I always advise students to target to meet the merit cut-off mark because it is the %100 guaranteed way to gain admission to UNN.
7. Check Admission Status
Checking your admission status on the JAMB CAPS or admission list on the UNN website are the two ways to know if you have been admitted to the university.
JAMB first releases the UNN admission list on the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), where you can accept admission. After that, it is released on the UNN website.
8. Acceptance and Registration
Acceptance of admission and registration involves creating your profile on the UNN website and uploading the necessary documents.
First-year clearance is a physical process in which a clearance official verifies your documents before giving you your matriculation number.
9. Stay Updated
Getting relevant information promptly is necessary to gain admission to UNN. It will help you not to miss out on the news about the Post UTME registration and release of the admission list.
For information, you can join Facebook group communities and WhatsApp groups.
