Rivers State University (RSU) Port Harcourt, formerly RSUST, is one of the best state universities in Nigeria for studying various courses in all disciplines. Unsurprisingly, people now prefer the school to UNIPORT because of the modern facilities and lack of the ASUU strike.
2017, I applied to Rivers State University to study Medical Laboratory Science. It was like a dream come true because I was among the first pre-degree program students at the university.
Unfortunately, I was admitted to another course I did not like due to some mistakes I made, which I will tell you about in this post.
If you’re applying to this school and looking for information about the admission process, how to pass the Post UTME exam, and cut-off marks, then this post is for you.
Remember, you can always let me know in the comment box at the end of this post if you have any questions. My desire is for you to succeed with your admission.

RSU Admission Requirements

Rivers State University uses JAMB and Post UTME for its admission process. It means that your score from these two exams determines your chances for admission.
Here are the admission requirements;
- O’level Subject Combination
- Admission Cut-Off Mark
- JAMB Subject Combination
- Age Requirement
- Post UTME Score
- Personal Identification Documents
O’level Subject Combination
O’level subject combination is the five (5) subjects in your West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO) results.
Every course at RSU has a subject combination you must possess as an applicant. For example, if you are applying to study Nursing Science, you must have a minimum of C6 in the following subjects;
- Mathematics
- English Language
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
Combining two (2) O’level results is possible except for courses like Medicine and Surgery and Law.
Failure to have the correct subject combination would make you lose your chances of admission. In the comment, you can let me know if you are unsure of the combination for the course you’re applying to study at RSU. I will assist you.
Admission Cut-Off Mark
Cut-off marks are the minimum score you must have for your JAMB or Post UTME to gain admission to Rivers State University.
The general cut-off marks apply to every student applying for the Post UTME. For example, the school might announce that the cut-off mark is 160. It means you are eligible for admission if you have that score and above.
The Post UTME cut-off mark determines your chances of admission. It is released after the screening exam. Every department has its cut-off marks based on students’ performance.
JAMB Subject Combination
JAMB subject combinations are the four (4) subjects you must register in your JAMB, depending on the course you’re applying to study.
For example, a student applying to Mechanical Engineering must sit for the use of English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry in the UTME examination.
I can also help you if you’re not sure of the combination for the course you want to study.
Age Requirement
A minimum entry age requirement is sixteen (16) years for students applying to Rivers State University. Ensure you meet this age requirement before registering for admission to the school.
Post UTME Score
Your Post UTME score is a significant factor in gaining admission to the school. It makes up 50% of your total aggregate score, and your JAMB score makes up the other half.
Ensure that you get a high score in your Post UTME. Well, you don’t have to worry because the next section of this post is a detailed explanation of how to pass the screening exam.
Personal Identification Documents
There are a few personal documents that are part of the admission requirements. These documents are submitted during your Post UTME application or first-year admission clearance.
The following are the personal identification documents required for admission;
- Birth Certificate

How to Pass RSU Post UTME

Here are tips on how to pass the Rivers State University Post UTME exam;
- Know the Exam Format
- Begin Early Preparation
- Study the Post UTME Syllabus
- Practice Past Questions
- Join Admission Groups
1. Know the Exam Format
Getting familiar with the school screening examination format is the first step to getting a high score on the exam.
The Rivers State University Post UTME format is your JAMB subject combination, Mathematics in the form of an aptitude test and Current Affairs. In a CBT exam, you will answer fifty (50) questions for thirty (30) minutes.
For example, if you’re applying to Law, you will sit for English Language, CRS, Literature, Government, Current Affairs and Mathematics.
2. Begin Early Preparation
Commence preparation early on so you will do well in the examination. As you must know, RSU has one of the fastest academic calendars. The exam will come only a few months after your JAMB.
Trust me, you don’t want to be caught unaware by news of the Post UTME registration. Remember that the higher your Post UTME score, the higher your chances for admission.
3. Study the Post UTME Syllabus
Familiarize yourself with the JAMB syllabus to know the answers to questions you will be asked on the day of the Post UTME.
The good news is that the curriculum is identical to the JAMB syllabus. It is just like preparing for the JAMB exam over again.
Although it wouldn’t be as rigorous as the JAMB exam, it would be like a revision.
4. Practice Past Questions
Go through old Post UTME questions to under the exam format better. This will help you know the questions to expect on the exam day, especially for the Mathematics and Current Affairs section.
I know the question on your mind is, how do I get this past question, is it available online, etc? Your best choice is to purchase the hard copy from the university campus. If you live outside Port Harcourt, you would need the assistance of somebody to purchase it for you.
When you get it, don’t just cram the answers to the questions. Ensure you study to know the reasons for the correct answers.
5. Join Admission Groups
As an aspirant, it is necessary to join RSU WhatsApp and Facebook groups to get up to date information.
Interacting with other aspirants and sharing ideas will better prepare you for the exam. Also, you will know when the Post UTME registration commences, the release of results, and the admission list.
How to Calculate RSU Aggregate Score
The RSU Post UTME aggregate score is calculated using the JAMB and Post UTME scores of students;
Here is the formula;
- JAMB: 50%
- Post UTME: 50%
- Divide your JAMB score by 8.
- Add your Post UTME score
Remember that the Post UTME score is over a hundred. So you don’t need to divide it when making your calculations.
RSU Post UTME Form & Cut Of Mark
The Rivers State University Post UTME form is done online at the University eCampus portal for a fee of two thousand nairas (₦2000).
The general cut-off mark for all courses is 160. But like I said earlier, having this JAMB score or above does not mean you’d automatically be given admission. You still need to meet the departmental cut off mark base on your performance in the Post UTME.
Let me know in the comment if you have any questions or need further clarification. I would love to hear from you.
