Studying at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, known as OAU or Great Ife, is a dream for every Nigerian student.

The school is not only unique for its academic excellence but also for its history, architecture, and cultural heritage. You’d know from the university campus gate that this is where you want to spend the next four years of your life pursuing your degree.

They say great things attract great minds. The same can be said about OAU. It is among the top 10 universities in Nigeria with the most JAMB applicants.

For this reason, admission to the Obafemi Awolowo University is highly competitive. You’d need a combination of a high JAMB and Post UTME score to beat the cut-off mark for whatever course you’re applying to study at Ife.

In this post, I will guide you on what you must know and do to perform excellently in the Post UTME examination.

If you have any questions, please let me know in the comment at the end of this post for further assistance. I would love to hear from you.

Here are the effective strategies you can utilize to pass the OAU screening test;

  1. Apply for the Right Course
  2. Understand the Exam Format
  3. Start Preparing for the Exam
  4. Practice Past Questions
  5. Join OAU Social Media Groups

1. Apply for the Right Course

Applying for the right course is the first step to gaining admission to Obafemi Awolowo University. By right course, I mean;

  • Having the right JAMB and O’level subject combination
  • JAMB score suitable for the course you’re applying to

OAU uses JAMB and O’level results for admission to various courses at the institution. Students with the wrong subjects would not be denied admission.

For example, if you’re applying for Nursing Science, the correct subject combination is;

SNJAMB SubjectO’level Subject
1Use of EnglishMathematics
2ChemistryEnglish Language
3BiologyChemistry
4PhysicsBiology
5Physics

If you’re unsure of the right subject combination for the course you want to study, please let me know in the comments for assistance.

Also, you must know the course that best suits your JAMB score. You plan to study the most competitive courses, such as law, medicine, mass communication, etc., but you need the correct JAMB score.

For example, if you’re applying to study law, you need a JAMB score above 280 to be admitted. The higher your UTME score, the higher your chances for admission.

2. Understand the Exam Format

Knowing the format for the screening test is necessary to perform excellently to get a high aggregate score to beat the cut-off mark for the course you’re applying to study.

OAU conducts a computer-based test (CBT) that comprises your JAMB subject combination and aptitude test questions (‎numerical reasoning, ‎verbal reasoning, and cognitive abilities test).

The exam is for thirty (30) minutes, and you will answer forty (40) questions with options A to E.

It is compulsory to get above twenty-five over forty (25/40) to qualify to have passed the Post UTME exam.

3. Start Preparing for the Exam

The secret to performing excellently in the screening test is to prepare adequately for the exam. Your level of preparation will be reflected in your Post UTME score.

Begin your preparation now, no matter when you’re reading this post. Start by drafting a study timetable with at least one (1) subject per day for a minimum of five (5) days per week.

I advise you to start with complex subjects at the beginning of the week. It will help to keep you focused for the rest of the week.

Also, note that you do not need unique study materials for this exam. Use your JAMB and WAEC textbooks for your JAMB preparation.

4. Practice Past Questions

Practicing past questions is the most effective study strategy for this exam. The screening is a bit different from the JAMB exam. It would be best if you had OAU past questions to understand the exam structure.

Past questions are necessary for preparing for every exam, even after you gain admission to the university. With this study material, you can evaluate your level of preparation and identify topics you find challenging.

But do not make the mistake of cramming past questions. It would lead to confusion and failure on the day of your exam. Ensure you understand and know the reason for every correct answer in the past question.

5. Join OAU Social Media Groups

Information is power, and staying informed about OAU admission is an added advantage to gaining admission to the university.

Join OAU Facebook and WhatsApp groups to get relevant information about the Post UTME and admission in general.

These platforms are communities where you would also be able to interact with other applicants like yourself.

Whenever you encounter any problem or have any questions, you can quickly bring them up on these platforms.

      I recommend she gets the past questions. There, she would be able to understand the format and syllabus for the Post UTME exam.
