In Nigeria, Data Science and Analytics is a course that teaches you how to make sense of large amounts of information (data) to help individuals and organisations make better decisions.
Data Science is like being a detective. You learn how to collect clues (data) from different places, clean them up, and then use advanced tools and methods (like statistics, programming, and even artificial intelligence) to find hidden patterns, predict what might happen in the future, and even create new ways to solve problems.
Several Federal, State and Private Universities offer this course, which I will highlight in this post.
Let me know if you have any questions or need further clarification. I would love to hear from you.

Admission Requirement

Data Science & Analytics is typically a 4-year program for UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) candidates or a 3-year program for Direct Entry candidates.
UTME Requirements
- O’Level Credits: Five (5) credit passes at SSCE (Senior School Certificate Examination – WAEC/NECO/GCE) or its equivalent in not more than two sittings. These usually must include:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Plus two (2) other science subjects from options like Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, Further Mathematics, Economics, Computer Studies, Data Processing, ICT, Technical Drawing.
- UTME Score: An acceptable score in the JAMB UTME, with the specific cut-off mark varying by university and the competitiveness of the program. The required UTME subjects are generally English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and one of Biology, Chemistry, Agric Science, Economics, or Geography.
Direct Entry (DE) Requirements
For candidates who have already completed a post-secondary qualification:
- A’ Level Passes: Two (2) or more A’ Level passes in relevant science subjects, typically including Mathematics and Physics.
- National Diploma (ND)/National Innovation Diploma (NID): A good OND/NID with at least an Upper Credit in relevant programs like Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or other related fields.
- Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE): Merit passes in Mathematics and another science or social science subject.
- Higher National Diploma (HND): Holders of HND with at least Upper Credit or Lower Credit in Computer Science, Data Science, or Computer Engineering, in addition to meeting the O’Level requirements.
- JUPEB/IJMB: A minimum number of points (e.g., 4 points) obtained from at least two subjects.
