The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, popularly known as UNN, is one of Nigeria’s prestigious universities in South-Eastern Nigeria.
Gaining admission to UNN is a dream come true for most Nigerian students who envision attending the very first Indigenous university in Nigeria.
In 2018, I sat for my fifth JAMB exam and decided to choose UNN as my first choice. It was a risky decision, but I decided it would be the school I would study at after my previous failures.
Today, as a graduate of the University of Nigeria, I now realize the information I got and strategies I applied that helped me not only pass the Post UTME but also get an aggregate score high enough to gain admission to the University College of Medicine.
In this post, I will be sharing with you helpful tips on how you can study and pass the Post UTME exam with a high score to gain admission to study your dream course.
Let me know in the comment if you have any questions, as I would love to hear from you and give you the best guidance.

How to Pass the UNN Post UTME Exam

The following points will help you excel in your upcoming Post UTME examination;
- Apply With a High JAMB Score
- Correct JAMB & O’level Subject Combination
- Know the Post UTME Format
- Start Studying for the Exam
- Practice UNN Past Questions
- Join UNN Social Media Groups
- Arrive Early at the Nsukka Campus
- Stay Calm on the Exam Day
1. Apply With a High JAMB Score
Gaining admission to any of the courses at UNN requires a high JAMB score independent of your O’level or Post UTME performance.
As you must know at this point, your JAMB score accounts for 50% of your aggregate score. It means that the higher your UTME score, the higher your chances of gaining admission are.
You must ensure that the course you choose is suitable for your JAMB score; if not, it would be best to apply for a JAMB Change of Course.
Now, here is what I mean; for example, if you’re applying to study medicine and surgery, you need a UTME score above 300 to stand an excellent chance of admission.
If you’re wondering why this is the case, it is because of the high number of students seeking admission, which makes the courses competitive.
If you’re not sure if your JAMB score will get you the course you have applied to study at UNN, you can let me know in the comment box to get the best advice.
2. Correct JAMB & O’level Subject Combination
A combination of the correct JAMB and O’level subjects is a prerequisite to admission to any course at the tertiary institution. Any mistake here would lead to automatic disqualification by JAMB.
As you know already, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board regulates admission using the CAPS portal. The system requires your O’level and JAMB subjects to be correct to be eligible for admission to the university.
For example, if you’re applying to Microbiology at UNN, your subject combination will be;
SN | O’level Subject | JAMB Subject |
---|---|---|
1 | English Language | Use of English |
2 | Mathematics | Biology |
3 | Chemistry | Chemistry |
4 | Biology | Physics |
5 | Physics | – |
Note that the O’level subject combination refers to the subjects you took in your WAEC, NABTEB, or NECO exams.
For admission, four (4) JAMB and five (5) relevant O’level subjects are required. You can let me know in the comment if you have any confusion or questions about the subject combination.
3. Know the Post UTME Format
Knowing the exam format is necessary to pass the screening test with a high score. Every exam has a format, and you must know the nature of the battle you’re about to face, or you’ll be defeated without dignity.
Knowledge of the exam format will guide your study pattern so that you can perform excellently. Thankfully, the university screening test is similar to the JAMB exam.
UNN Post UTME format is a CBT test comprising sixty questions (15 from each subject) from your JAMB subject combination for one hour.
It means that if you wrote Use of English, CRS, Literature, and Commerce in your JAMB exam, it is the same set of questions you will come across during the Post UTME exam.
4. Start Studying for the Exam
Studying for the exam is an open secret to getting a high score to beat the aggregate score for whatever course you’re applying to study at UNN.
A common mistake many students make is not taking this exam seriously. After all, they feel the JAMB exam deserves the maximum preparation. It is not true because doing well in this screening exam equally determines if you will gain admission.
From today, draft a study timetable for each day of the week where a minimum of one subject is read.
As you know, you are preparing for four (4) subjects, so ensure you give your best. Also, it would be best if you focused more on the UTME subject, which is your weak point.
After your JAMB, you now know the subject for which you got the lowest score and found the most challenging. Ensure you pay more attention here to do well in the screening test.
5. Practice UNN Past Questions
Practicing the UNN past question would help to determine your level of preparation and enhance your overall performance.
The past questions are a compilation of previous examinations over ten years that include questions and answers to the correct questions.
Many students make the common mistake of cramming the past question. It is the wrong approach because it would lead to confusion on the day of your exam.
The right method to use past questions is to know the reason for every answer. When you fail a question, you go back to your textbook and read about the concept. By doing so, you will be able to understand why option A is the correct answer.
6. Join UNN Social Media Groups
Joining UNN groups is essential to getting updated information about the Post UTME registration, exam date, and release of cut-off marks.
When I applied to UNN many years ago, I joined lots of groups where I interacted with both students and aspirants like myself. I must confess that singular action played a good role in ensuring my admission to UNN.
Join Facebook and WhatsApp groups that are relevant to your exam success. Ensure that whatever group you join, there is an appropriate conversation you find helpful concerning the University of Nigeria.
7. Arrive Early at the Nsukka Campus
The UNN Post UTME is a physical test that takes place at the university’s Nsukka Campus. It means that wherever you’re in the country, you will have to travel down to UNN to sit for the exam.
If you’re coming from far away, ensure you arrive a day before your exam to settle in the environment and prepare your mind for the screening.
The university usually provides hostel accommodation for Post UTME students for a fee. Alternatively, you can get assistance from the St Peter’s Catholic Church for free accommodation.
8. Stay Calm on the Exam Day
The last thing I want you to know concerning the UNN screening test is the importance of staying calm during the examination.
On the day of your screening, you will see a large number of students applying for the same course as you, which would be overwhelming.
However, you must maintain your composure and remain calm to be able to choose the correct options for your exam.
Staying calm would only be possible if you have met the other requirements in this post, such as studying and practicing past questions.
Conclusion
Achieving a high score in the UNN Post UTME exam requires a structured and dedicated approach. By following the tips outlined in this guide, you can significantly improve your chances of success.
With consistent effort and the right strategies, you can confidently conquer the UNN Post UTME exam and secure your admission into your dream university.
