How to Pass WAEC Exam Excellently in One Sitting Without Stress 2026

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) is one of the most important exams you will write because it is the final step towards graduating from secondary or high school.

I sat for my WAEC exam in 2012, and it still feels like yesterday as I remember how anxious I felt the day before my exam. I thought I had not prepared adequately and would probably fail.

The exam is deemed difficult because you will write essays, multiple choice and practicals that are different from other exams like JAMB, where you only answer objective questions.

However, with my experience and interaction with other students over the years, I can tell you that WAEC is not difficult to pass. You only need to put in the work, have the right mindset, and implement the best study strategy to get excellent results.

So, please overcome the fear of failure because, in this post, I will share practical tips on taking your O’level exams with good grades. Please let me know if you have any questions in the comments.

How to Pass the WAEC Exam

Here are the tips on how you can prepare and pass the WAEC exam in one sitting;

  1. Develop a Positive Mindset
  2. Get the WAEC Syllabus
  3. Purchase at Least One Recommended Textbook
  4. Create a Study Timetable
  5. Study Your Secondary School Notes
  6. Practice Past Questions
  7. Attend Lesson Tutorials
  8. Create or Join a Study Group

  10. Avoid Social Media Distractions
  11. Take Care of Your Health

1. Develop a Positive Mindset

The first step to passing any exam is developing a positive mindset for success. It may sound cliche, but if you have self-belief, you’ll be able to work hard to achieve excellence.

As a student, it is usual to doubt your academic capability, especially if you did not attend a good secondary school. This feeling is familiar when you have to sit for subjects like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Many years ago, I also felt the same way when preparing for my O’level exams. But I want to tell you that you can make it with good grades like every other student.

From today, don’t doubt your ability to prepare for the exam to get the best grades. With the remaining tips I will share below, I assure you you will come out victorious.

2. Get the WAEC Syllabus

The WAEC syllabus is a documentation of the topics and recommended textbooks for each of the subjects you will be sitting for in the exam.

In this syllabus, you will see everything you are expected to know by the exam body. Also, you will see the structure of the exam, like what Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 means.

For example, in Atom in Chemistry, you will know what you’re expected to read about orbitals, features of atoms, electron configuration, relative atomic mass, characteristics, and the nature of matter.

It is not optional to get this syllabus because questions are asked directly from it. WAEC would never set exams outside their syllabus.

You can get the syllabus from your school after registration or view it online on this page.

The WAEC syllabus contains a list of textbooks you must get for each subject to use in your exam preparation.

You must get at least one of these textbooks because it is where the examination body would ask questions.

The good news is that you probably already have one of the recommended textbooks from your senior secondary school. But if not, I advise purchasing one for your exam preparation.

For example, one recommended Physics textbook is “Ike, E. E (2014) Essential Principles of Physics, Jos ENIC Publishers.”

4. Create a Study Timetable

Creating a study timetable is an effective strategy to keep you organised and accountable for your study schedules.

A personal study timetable is a breakdown of the subject you’re taking in WAEC assigned to different days of the week, as well as a specific time and duration for study.

Drafting a timetable will help you to know what to study for each day. It would be a wrong approach if you don’t see what to read for a specific day, like waking up in the morning and reading anything.

The secret of those who do well in this exam is that they have a study plan they follow judiciously. It must be achievable, as there is no need to schedule 15 hours per day when you know you read for such duration.

The study timetable you will create depends on whether you’re still going to school or at home full-time. However, I will provide a template you can use to make yours based on your schedule.

So, let’s assume you’re sitting for the following subjects for the O’level exam;

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Agricultural Science
  • Economics
  • Government

It is always advisable to start the week with your most challenging subjects as it will stimulate you to achieve your study plan for the rest of the week.

Also, you can decide to study a particular subject a day or combine two subjects.

5. Study Your Secondary School Notes

Your high school notes are essential for your study. As you know, the WAEC syllabus covers all the topics you’ve done in secondary school.

As much as you will also use your textbook to prepare for the exam, studying your school notes will help you significantly answer essay questions.

For subjects like mathematics, the examples and classwork given to you by your class teacher may be more helpful than the textbook as you could relate more to it since you wrote it.

But, if you have finished secondary school for some time now and don’t have access to your notes, you have no problem as you can always study using the recommended textbooks.

6. Practice Past Questions

Practising WAEC past questions is the secret to getting A’s in the examination. Past questions are a guide to determine your level of preparation and better understand the exam format.

Since the exam is divided into Essay, Multiple-Choice and Practical, past questions will help you know how to answer questions from the different categories.

For the essay part, you will find the past question particularly helpful because you will quickly figure out what you expected to write as your answer. You could cram some of the essays you find simpler than what is in your textbook or notes.

However, for the multiple-choice test, ensure you understand the reason for the answers to any question. Simply cramming them would not be helpful as you may get confused when you see a similar question on exam day.

I know the question on your mind is where to get the past questions. You can purchase them at any bookshop close to you.

7. Attend Lesson Tutorials

Attending lesson tutorials will help with your examination preparation, especially as you get extra assistance with complex subjects.

WAEC lessons are common, even for candidates currently in secondary school; your school will organize these tutorials to be able to cover the syllabus.

But ensure that whatever tutorial you attend is helpful for your exam, not some TikTok and teenage get-together.

I know what I’m saying because back when I used to attend tutorials, it was a fashion competition. My advice for you is to stay focused and get a good result.

8. Create or Join a Study Group

Joining or creating a study group with other students sitting for the WAEC exams helps pass the exam.

I prefer this because you get to interact with your fellow students, and as you try to explain or answer questions together, you get better retention.

If you don’t know something, you learn better when you explain a topic to a friend or classmate. You can never forget or fail such questions in the exam.

The problem with study groups is that you guys might play and discuss irrelevant topics unrelated to the exam.

Ensure you get about three people maximum who are serious about getting an excellent grade on the exam. It would be best if you guys shared topics to fix a convenient time and venue for your group study.

9. Sit for the WAEC Mock Exam

The WAEC mock exam is a pre-exam organized by secondary schools to test students on their preparedness for the main exam.

The mock questions are set using the same format as the West African Examination Council. The difference is that your performance is not added to the main exam.

But still, mock exams have proven to help students perform excellently in their exams. During the mock, you would be able to identify your weak points, know the topics you need to focus on and learn how to answer questions.

The mock exam is not compulsory, but ensure you enrol and take it seriously as if it were the main exam.

10. Avoid Social Media Distractions

Distraction from social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook is one reason why many students fail the WAEC exams.

As a student preparing for the O’level exams, you must reduce your social media usage. It isn’t easy because you can’t stay without checking your WhatsApp or TikTok.

But know that addiction to these platforms will reduce your attention span and prevent you from being focused on your studies.

When you wake up in the morning, refuse the urge to check your TikTok, WhatsApp or Instagram. You can do this at the end of the day when you must have achieved all your study goals.

If you need further help with this, let me know in the comments.

11. Take Care of Your Health

Taking care of your health and living a healthy lifestyle, like exercising and getting adequate night rest, will help you perform well in your exams.

I have seen students ignore their health and have to pay the hard way because they fell sick during the WAEC exam, which affected their performance.

Most of you’re better off studying during the day and having a good night’s rest. But, if you understand better at night, you can study then and sleep in the morning.

But, ensure you don’t get sleep-deprived because you’re preparing for an exam. Your brain needs time to retain the information you read, which is done when you sleep.

Conclusion

Passing the WAEC exam in one sitting without stress is achievable with diligent preparation and effective study techniques. Remember to:

  • Create a comprehensive study plan: Allocate time for each subject, set achievable goals, and stick to your schedule.
  • Utilize effective study techniques: Experiment with various methods like active recall, spaced repetition, and mind mapping to find what works best for you.
  • Practice consistently: Solve past questions and take mock exams to familiarize yourself with the exam format and improve your time management skills.
  • Take care of your physical and mental health: Get enough sleep, eat nutritious food, and manage stress through relaxation techniques.
  • Seek help when needed: Don’t hesitate to ask your teachers, classmates, or tutors for assistance if you encounter difficulties.

By following these guidelines, you can increase your chances of success in the WAEC exam and achieve your academic goals.
